Drone laws in El Salvador

This article deals with the legal situation for the use of drones in El Salvador.

The use of drones in El Salvador is generally permitted. Drones weighing less than 200 grams do not have to be registered. For drones between 200 grams and 150 kilograms, you must register yourself as the operator and your drone. The maximum take-off weight for recreational purposes is 25 kilograms. The registration requirement applies regardless of whether you want to use the drone privately or commercially. All the necessary forms are currently only available in Spanish.

Flight bans and safety distances

The minimum age for you as a drone pilot for recreational use is 16 years and for commercial use 18 years.

Drone flights are only possible during the day within visual line of sight.

Keep at least 6 kilometers away from airports. The distance to private runways must not be less than 2 kilometers. The distance to helipads must not be less than 250 meters.

Overflight of military facilities, hospitals, private property and restricted areas is not permitted without authorization.

The maximum flight altitude is 400 feet (121 meters).

As a drone pilot, you are not permitted to operate two or more drones at the same time.

In addition, the drone may not be operated from a moving vehicle or platform.
