This article is intended to give you an overview of the drone laws currently in force in Nicaragua.
Unfortunately, the import and operation of drones in Nicaragua is generally prohibited for private individuals and companies. Since the publication of the new official legal framework Ley No. 1230 in December 2024, only very limited special permits (e.g. for scientific studies, search/rescue/recovery as well as certain tourism, recreational, sporting and cultural events) are possible with prior authorization from the relevant government authorities. Violations may result in administrative or criminal consequences.
Drones are confiscated upon entry. Several drone pilots have already had this painful experience. However, you may be able to retrieve your drone for a fee if you leave the country via the same airport. There is no guarantee of this!
In the comments below the article, we have also read that drone equipment has been detected by authorities even when entering the country by land. In that specific case, the equipment was confiscated and sent to another border crossing (for a fee of 40 US dollars) where the departure was planned. However, we cannot currently confirm whether this transfer always works. In addition, you have to rely on the package arriving in full.
We definitely recommend leaving your drone at home when traveling to Nicaragua.
